What’s your excuse?
I wanted to share with you a very insightful story that a friend of mine who runs a gym shared with me.
A woman came into his gym and said that she really wanted to join as she needed to lose weight for health reasons but she could not afford the monthly membership fee. My friend told the woman that he wanted to help her so he’d make her a deal…
He would give her a free 30 day membership. During those first 30 days, if she came in and exercised 15 times then he would give her the next 30 days for free, the same for the next month, and the next month. So in essence this woman could have a lifetime free membership IF she used it. The woman was so happy and very grateful to my friend for making such a generous deal with her. Do you know what happened in the following 30 days?
She showed up 6 times and never came back.
You can probably see what I’m getting at here….money wasn’t the issue. The cost of the gym membership wasn’t the ‘thing’ that was holding this woman back from losing weight. It was a convient scapegoat.
Having been a Personal Trainer for so long, I realized a long time ago that it will never be the perfect time to get in shape. Money will always be funny! Time will always be limited! Fear will often be unspoken! And EXCUSES NEVER SATISFY!
Now, please allow me to make this very general statement that has been a fairly accurate assessment through my years training. True happiness comes from feeling good about yourself. How you look, How you feel and how perform (mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually). Rarely does in come from what you possess i.e. that Benz, that Gucci, that pair of red bottoms, those rims, etc.,etc. I’ve also found some of the most miserable people using these possessions as medicine, hoping it will make them feel better about themselves(again, a general statement). Don’t get me wrong, I like nice things that are sometimes out of my budget and will splurge. But when you get out the benz, take off the Louie, kick off the red bottoms, take off the mascara, tie your hair back….when you look in that mirror, can you smile and say “I’m happy with where I am, where i’m going and how i’m getting there”. If you can, that is a beautiful thing, keep up the good work! But if you can’t, then trash the excuses stop waiting for tomorrow to come and start your journey now! All the other bullshit, is just bullshit and I have heard it all!
Take a moment and do a budget of your money, time and energy. What are you spending them on? How much of it is being wasted on stuff that’s not moving you closer to happiness? Are you prepared to sacrifice those resources for happiness?
What are your convenient scape goats?
What are the reasons you give for not losing weight and reaching your goals?
If your will, share below! Write them down and throw it in the recycle bin never to mention them again.
Then get down to work to get in shape and lose the weight!
Sorry for the soapbox!
